Betty Press grew up in rural Nebraska on a farm. She is best known for her photographs taken in Africa, where she lived and worked in Kenya from 1987-1995, in Sierra Leone 2008-09, and most recently in Kenya 2019-2020. Now living in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, her current project focuses on life in small communities throughout the state documenting how landscape, race, and religion play a part in the complicated history of Mississippi. For this work she has received awards from the Mississippi Institute of Arts & Letters and the Mississippi Arts Commission. Her photographs have been widely exhibited and collected around the world as well as being selected for many juried competitions. In 2011, she published her award-winning photobook I Am Because We Are: African Wisdom in Image and Proverb, a life-affirming portrait of the African people and culture.
