Monika Bułaj, born in 1966, is a Polish photojournalist, reporter, documentary filmmaker, and TED fellow based in Italy. She has explored the borderlands of monotheism, the nomadic tribes, the minorities, the migrants, the outcasts, and the dispossessed – in the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe. She has worked for La Repubblica, Corriere della Sera, Geo, National Geographic, and the New York Times among others. Bułaj is the author of several books, such as NUR. The hidden light of Afghanistan selected by Time magazine as one of the best photographic books of 2013. She has exhibited her work worldwide in more than 60 personal exhibitions and is the recipient of several awards and fellowships for her photography. (Photo shot in Havana, Cuba, 2014.
